I'm a citizen of another country, but a permanent resident (green card holder) of the US. If I'm stopped by border patrol on a greyhound bus, will they accept my driver's license as proof of legal residence?

No. only a green card is valid proof of legal residency. The Republicans tried to get a "national ID" bnut that smacks too much of the USSR requiring internal passports that it was nixed. So now they want "proof of citizenship or residency" before issuing a drivers licence.

The Republicans are making this country less free and more like a dictatorship the more they push for this unitary executive idea.

If you're stopped by Border Patrol, you will definitely be required to present your I-551. The Border Patrol won't be interested in your ability to drive (especially if you're on a bus) but they will want to see something that shows you have a right to be here. And a copy won't be sufficient. Since you're going to Mexico, you should have your I-551 to return.

BTW, if you return on a bus, you'll be arriving at a Port of Entry. Border Patrol won't be there, it'll be Customs and Border Protection who'll process you there. However, there is a BP checkpoint at San Clemente (and other locations about 25 miles from the southern border) where you may once again be asked to show your residency documents.

Check the citation below, about half-way down.
Hope this helps.

No, temporary legal residents are eligible for licenses in all states. Take your green card.

No they won't. Many States give licenses to illegals.

Since replacing a greencard is such a hassle it's not a bad idea to just carry a copy, and leave the original somewhere safe.
