You don't have much room in a bowl for anything. Thinking betta's love crowded tiny pots is a misconception propagated by the pet industry. It'll love a 10 gallon tank with filters and plants to hide behind. Otherwise, give it 1 plant or two..just for diversity, but please don't crowd such a small bowl.

Hi there!

If you really want to treat your betta, first, get him a tank at least 5 gallons, and a heater with thermostat (they don't make heaters with thermostats for tanks any smaller than that). Bettas are tropical fish, and they like their water 78-80 degrees stable. Your bowl won't be much more than room temp, which is way too low for a healthy betta.

Then, yes, decorate with plants - silk plants are OK, but live plants are better - they help keep the water clean, and oxygenate the water - and bettas love plants. Java moss is good, and doesn't need a lot of light. Other good plants for lower-light tanks (the lights that come with fishtanks are lower-light) include java ferns, crypts, and anubias. Most pet stores just sell faster-growing plants which need a lot of light, so be sure you know what you're getting.

I'm glad you want to take good care of your fish. The regular maintenance schedule is also a good thing, though you might want to do it about twice a week if you stay with the little bowl.

Good luck!

Yes it is temporary. It is normal for bettas to act a little strange when they get exposed to a new environment all of a sudden...There is nothing to worry about... He was first in a small congested bowl and now he has alot of space to himself so he is bound to get a little overwhelmed by it...Plants are good, they make bettas feel secure...And about him not eating in your presence, hiding and swimming fast.. that could be due to 2 reasons: 1.He is afraid of you or 2.He is getting territorial. Its just a matter of time.

bettas love java moss, they love just about any silk or live plant. just make sure the plants pass the pantyhose test (if the plant snags the pantyhose then it will hurt your fish). i suggest getting a tiny plant or if u get a big one keep it trimmed (live plants). i suggest getting a live plant if u dont have a filter as it will help the quality of the water, and bettas love to lay, run against, nibble them. good luck!

I have silk plants in my betta's bowls and they seem to like them. One of them enjoys burrowing underneath his to rest. The other doesn't seem to notice it as much. My plants are pretty small and I think there were some even smaller than the ones I bought.
