i know there are women who have murdered serially and andrea yates killed her 5 children, but i can't think of an instance where a lone woman committed mass murder where the victims were seemingly random. can you? if so, how might her motivations differ from those of a man who commits the same crime.

The only recent examples I can think of right now are the female suicide bombers in the Middle East. They commit mass murder when they blow themselves up and their victims are completely random.

In regards to worst serial killer being Elizabeth Bathory...

Thug Behram, a gang leader of the Indian Thuggee cult of assassins, has frequently been said to be the world's most prolific serial killer. According to numerous sources, he was believed to have murdered 931 victims by strangulation by means of a ceremonial cloth, thus holding the record for the most murders directly committed by a single person in history.

as for motivations; there was a study done on this. In order of highest motivation came Money (74%), Drugs, Cult involvement, cover up, or feelings of inadequacy (24%), Control (13%), Enjoyment (11%), Sex (10%). [For those with some math skills thinking that adds up to more than 100%, thats because there is often more than one motive]

Heres some interesting info on female serial killers

This site has a list that shows that female serial killers almost always target people that they know and not random targets.

I can't find any for mass murderers, so far. The best answer would be the one above me who cited a woman "going postal", but it still doesn't compare to the victims of male mass murderers and serial killers. Unless I misunderstood your question, you asked about female mass murderers, not serial killers and it appears that you know, as well as I, that there is a huge difference between the two.

Sorry guys but Elizabeth Bathory and Wournos were allegedly serial killers, not mass murderers.

The accident was a result of sheer stupidity, but not on the boys part. What kind of person has a weapons collection, and then allows a four year old boy into the same room? That's irresponsibility of epic proportions. You feminists have gone to new levels of stupidity, if you want to hold the whole male gender accountable for the actions of one four your old boy who did something by accident.

for all of you that cited aileen wournos, she was a serial killer, and her killings were not random. A mass murderer is a very different kind of animal. That is why you, snarky, got a thumbs down, not because your facts about Wournos are incorrect, but because your classification of her is.

And rovale is right, the female suicide bombers are the closest, however, even they are quite few and far between.

Get the movie "Monster" and you will see some of the motivations for a woman who killed randomly and was considered a serial killer.

BTW, Andrea Yates does not qualify as a serial killer..maybe a mass murderer..but she had a mental break. Most serial killers don't have mental breaks and then go killing. They have been raised up and slowly trained to be killers by the people who are around them.

How about Aileen Wuornos?
I don't think her motivations were really any different than a man's might be, though.

Of course it happens. Aileen Wuornos had murdered many men in cold blood. She was a troubled prostitute and after being beaten and raped by one of her 'customers' she killed him and took his cash and car. She gave up on men and began a relationship with a female. After being unsuccessful with finding better work for herself, Wuornos began targeting perverted men for their money and vehicles - even if she had to kill them to get it. She was executed for her crimes.
