Yes. These were owned by Bristol City Council but run by the Church of England Children's Society, now just called The Children's Society. The home consisted of large houses, these each housed children according to their ages - so unfortunately siblings did not get to be together except at play times and maybe after meals.
They wore brown uniforms and went to the local church every Sunday.

I was there from Sept 1954 to March 1960. My elder sister was there too and told me about most of this.

I have attached a link about the homes, not much I am afraid. I am trying to research into my own care and fostering background so anything I find out about the homes I will forward onto you (it is however a slow process)
Just added another link that some children were sent to Canada in late 1930's.

I was at Downend babies Home in the early 60 s I have a picture of the place!
