Before I had kids I had terrible cramps each month. Like someone else mentioned, a heating pad to the abdomen helps a little bit.
Now that I'm older I have other reasons for cramping. My doc put me on Yasmin, which helped somewhat. But I read that if you take Omega 3 or 6 fish oil supplements it's supposed to help with the cramping as well. So I tried it. I take 2400mg of Omega 3 every night (not just during your period). Now if I do get cramps, they are tolerable and easily treated by popping a couple of Midol. The fish oil has really made a difference. I told a friend about this and it has helped her alot too. Prevention seems to work better than trying to find relief in the middle of your cramping crisis!
Good luck to you! I definitely know the pain you are in. I can remember my mom having to pick me up from school because I was in so much pain.

I lie on the floor on my back and just lean my legs to the side or something. you may have to move around to find a comfortable position. when the pain goes away i can then usually get up and be painless for an hour or so. but then i have to lie down again.

If this has happened before, you may want to consider having your doctor put you on "The Pill." Most women find that birth control pills help to "level out" their periods, so that they are shorter, more predictable, and less painful. Additionally, substantial research has shown that using birth control can help PREVENT ovarian cancer... so it's a 2 for 1 deal: less painful periods, and a lower risk of ovarian cancer as you age.
This might not help you with your current period, but it is an idea for next time.

If you drink a tea. It will not help you with your cramp. Because, it have caffeine in the tea. Try to avoid them. if you are taking a neurophen or midol. It should work with out caffeine to relieve your cramp.

The ONLY thing that helps me is a hot water bottle.
When I don't have a hot water bottle around - I fill up a ziploc with hot water.
