In a nutshell, because he told the truth.
During his campaign, his 'team' had put listening devices in the offices of the opposing candidate's team.
During a long investigation after a tip on this, Nixon actually told on himself by handing over office tapes of his that he didn't really have to... he believed he had executive privilege and could not be prosecuted.
The irony is today what they do is destroy the evidence... Nixon could have done that and just received a slap on the wrist.

He resigned to avoid being impeached. I remember that well. See, when he had the folks break into the Democrat headquarters to find out who would be his opponent in '72s race caused an uproar then he tried to cover it up and folks just couldn't let it go. Someone once wrote that if he had perhaps said, well I'm the President and I took the authority I had to do this and that's that, perhaps the American public would have took it another way, but as in things you try to cover up, things just go wrong. My father felt Nixon was a good President but that incident was bad for him.

Perjury. He lied about his involvement in the break in at the DNC headquarters in the Watergate Hotel in Washington DC.
Resigned before his trial in the senate. Earlier he appointed Gerald Ford to replace Spiro Agnew, his vice-president who was forced to resign because of bribery and extortion charges fron when he was Governor of New Jersey.
Ford pissed off a huge segment of the country when he pardonned Nixon almost immediately after taking office.
Cheney is, and has been, working to restore the power that the office of the president lost after Nixon resigned.

Exactly what it says. He had contempt for college kids who did not get drafted and was angry that they were protesting the U.S. involvement in the war which he didnt think was patriotic.
