I had my baby shower about a month before my daughter was born. The good thing about having the party early, is that you will know what you still need to get after you have the party, before the baby is born, if for any reason your baby decides to get out of there early, you are all set up and ready to go.I like to be prepared ahead of time, but thats just me.
Good luck to you and your baby.

Before:
Pro's: Then the mother will get things from other women she did not get yet for the baby. Therefor saving her money.
Con's: There is not really any con's because before giving the expectant mother a baby shower, is that you ask her what she really want or still need for the baby.
After the baby is born:
Pro's: There aren't really are any because the mother has got everything already for the baby. She had to because she needs everything to be ready for when the baby is there already.
Con's: You will get things for her that she may already have. Or the mother will have bought everything already because she need to have the neccesary for when the baby arrived. That is if you haven't warned the mother before hand that the shower will be after the baby is born.

Pros for before, It tends to lift your spirits during those last few weeks before the baby comes. It allows you to have a realistic idea of the items you will need to take care of a new baby. that way you won't have 3 bath tubs, and no baby swing etc.
Cons for before, After you have had a baby exhaustion is a constant companion. New moms are not feeling much like hosting a party those first few weeks at home. If you have a difficult pregnancy or the baby is ill or you lose the pregnancy, returning all those gifts is extreemly depressing and difficult. Happily, that is a rare occasion so go ahead and do what feels right.

I n ever found out the sex..and let me tell you this was a great great suprise. Nothing in the world could have topped the moment and the suspense. WONDERFUL :)
I had a two get together type showers after my daughter was born.
You only really need a few outfits, diapers, whipes, soap, tub, and maybe some meals made for yourself ahead of time for the actual baby.
All this stuff everyone gives you at the showers you never really use until the baby is more then a few weeks old.

Before...so that, as people above have said, the parents can have everything ready to go when baby arrives. Preferably a few weeks before, just in case baby decides to make an early appearance.

I'm a firm believer in after the baby is born. My fear before is that you get all these things, what if something goes wrong. I feel that it is a bad omen. Besides...if you have it before all you get is a bunch of green and yellow stuff...how boring!!

you can go before or after, its totally your choice....pro on before - you can get presents that you'll need for babies arrival
Pro on after - if you wanted the 'surprise' of babies sex you can wait til after the birth so people know what to buy you and then everyone can meet the new arrival as well.

EASY... I thought about this. Before you get stuff you need and it prepares you, and you can have things organized. After....that's the best time to get stuff you still need and or forgot. Also if it's a pregnancy where you don't want to know the sex, afterwards the guests can purchase boy/girl themed gifts!
