Bobby Carpenter and Pat Lafontaine did a lot more than Hockey in America than.
Within months of Bobby Carpenter appearing on the cover of Sports Illustrated (as a high school senior), the number of high schools playing hockey in America increased 61% (and there has not been a 61% increase in the 20+ years since then.
Likewise, for almost 15 years, Lafontaine was the poster boy for Hockey USA. When I talk to kids in America, I find that Lafontaine and Roenick are the most popular American born players. Had Roenick not had such a steep decline in skills (for the first 12 years of their career, Roenick had more points and a better ppg than Modano), he would have been the highest scoring American player.

Currently, probably Vincent Lecavalier, he combines the most aspects of the game to the best degree of the lot of them right now. Crosby has offensive gifts but Vinny's offensive prowess is still every bit as strong as Sid's, his goal scoring abilities are superior and he lends a strong physical game that Sid cannot contend with. Overall I'd rather have Lecavalier *RIGHT NOW*, in the future, that could well change.
The question was worded as 'is' not 'was' so no need to get into all-time lists.

All-time...no doubt Wayne Gretzky, after that Gordie Howe and Brett Hull
...but personal favorite is Mike Modano, afterall, he is the all-time leading goal scorer and points leader for American born players in the NHL. He has done more for hockey as an American than anyone else.

Lidstrom.
Sure, guys like Crosby, Ovechkin, and Thornton are amazing... but Lidstrom has been at his worst, a top 3 defenseman each and every year for the last decade.
