Now the 'low battery' orange light is glowing when the lap top is plugged in.

A battery is only good for a certain number of charge / discharge cycles, and after that it is finished. You can keep using the battery in your dell until it doesn't work at all - ignoring the message. You won't harm your laptop.

When you want a new one, look for the brand upstart battery. They come with a lifetime warranty so at least if you kill the battery again, it will be on them, haha...

It shouldn't even show that message.

The battery will only last a few years although what happens is that the capacity of the battery gradually reduces until the point at which it becomes unable to hold much of a charge (though at 3 years it'll probably still run your laptop for more than an hour).

Ignore what theshadowknows says, Dell tends to use cells from Sony, Panasonic and Sanyo which aren't Chinese companies and the aftermarket junk he recommends is a lot more likely to catch fire on you then even the worst that the big battery companies produce (the recall over those defective Sony cells was over a 1 in 200000 chance, aftermarket batteries tend to be a lot more dangerous than that).

Dells use cheap batteries from china and they don't last long. Get a new battery, but buy it from somewhere else, like Fedco Electronics. They make good batteries that fit in most laptops.

Dell, no wonder....
The message should not be there when your laptop was new. After two years, yes, the statement becomes more true now.

im pretty sure batteries dont reach the end of 'its usable life' I would first check at dell.com and if you find nothing there, scan your computer for viruses and spyware...chances are it could just be some annoyance.
