It depends on what you are doing before you go to sleep. Most nightmares are exactly the oppsite of what you dream about. Say you dream that your significant other is cheating on you. It is the exact oppsite. What I do is get up get a drink of water and try not to think about what I dreamed about. I lay in bed and think of things that I need to do tommorrow then I go back to sleep. In other words I am trying to get what i dreamed about out of my head and myself back to reality!!

then if praying helps just keep that up...nightmares sometimes are trying to send a message to you...read it in a book.

Praying is the best solution for nightmares. Other solutions might be don't watch scary or violent movies before bedtime.

I used to jump out of bed when i have terrible nightmares. At times, these nightmares last for weeks. I can only get to bed when i am extremely tired. It takes me quite a while to get to sleep.

Luckily I haven't had one for quite some time now (bet you anything I will tonight because I am saying this) but I usually just remind myself it isn't real. i think the worst nightmares aren't ones with scary images, but ones when someone you care for hurts you, and it stays with you the whole day afterwards even though you know it isn't true..I hate those nightmares!

I generally don't anticipate them, and since the purpose of dreams is more or less a way of purging the subconscious mind, I don't try to prevent them. I am generally glad to be awake afterward; however, I tend to stop having them upon waking. Thankfully.
