The power button should be two posts. i think the wires are white and blue? find those two posts and touch them with a screw driver. If your computer turns on then your switch is bad. Sounds to me like it is either a bad mother board or a bad power supply.

There's a lotta stuff on the Internet when you google "dimension 4600" "power". But even Dell's support page doesn't seem to say a lot about the pinout of that connector. You can check though, the link is below:
A few people said with this problem, their motherboard was shot, even with the light on it (the "yup there's power here" lite). And a few others said replacing a power supply even with the light on helped them. Nobody mentioned a switch.
I do know that Dell's power supplies are Dell's power supplies. Any other computer can use a generic power supply, but Dell's computers can't.
I'm leaning a little towards the defective mobo tho.

It sounds like there's obviously something wrong. Is it just plain old dead? Is your motherboard fried? If not, then perhaps you should use the warranty (hopefully not out of date) and send it in to Dell for a nice check up. good luck :)

I know it's a bit basic, but make sure that the cord is all the way plugged into the computer. This happened to me and it took me like four hours to figure it out. -_-

I think you are in way over your head. Find a friend with hardware savy skills and tools or bite the bullet and put it in the shop.

Theres a battery on it. I dont know if that would cause your computer not to start, but maybe if you replace it itll work. dunno. i would recommend going to a professional [computer service, such as at bestbuy, staples, compusa, circuit city] and have them look at it if that doesnt work.
