Why didn't I act on it sooner? What do I do without my idea??
I feel like my soul has been ripped out of me. I have nothing now....

because I'm an idiot krissy! besides, you can't patent a website I don't think. I can probably still make the same one, but it may be illegal to make it now that someone else has.

That happened with me with the movie I now pronounce you Chuck and Larry. It makes you feels exactly how you explain it. A piece of you dies inside. You just have to learn to shrug it off and act sooner. You got to start being a does and not a dreamer. And also you could start wearing foil on your head to prevent them from stealing your ideas. Just Joking. Still be careful who you tell, and try not to search stuff on the internet. The search engines save all the information for market research. That could mean anything.

Try not fret too much over it - ideas are like coat hangers, rubber bands and rabbits - they tend to multiply and multiply and ....... you get the picture.
If some one took your idea first, a few things could have happened.
You were too slow doing anything with it
You spoke about it too much and gave your idea away.
Learn from this!
Keep your ideas secret until you have the bones written down. Name, number, date and sign the pages.
When you do any revision, do the same thing - write down the part you are re-working, then the revised section, and again, name, number, date and sign the pages adding REVISED to the page.
This also goes for any work you are doing on inventions etc.
Overall, thoughts are ideas - if you take action and use them, they are provably yours.
When you take no action, an idea is just a thought and you cannot copyright or patent a thought or even an idea unless you are able to prove it is workable, feasible, and most of all, doable..
Can you rework your original idea into something else.
If not - take a deep breath, pick yourself up, and start all over again.

Actions speak louder than words.
As far as krissy's answer is concerned:
To get somnething "patented", a person has to have plans AND a prototype AND after the patent is granted, to be ready, willing and able to go into almost-immediate production.
If its any consolation, look how many others are doing the same thing someone else wanted to be the first to do.
It doesn't mean you can't do it. It just means you won't be the first.
Unless you want to get into specifics, that's about the only suggestion I can offer.

Ron

I only let people I know and trust the most to hear my ideas, that way the information can't be used before I can use it. I'm sorry to hear that your idea has been taken, but don't give up! If you can think of an idea then you can think up another!

That means you've been scooped. Don't worry, it happens all the time. I've been scooped on two papers already this year. Just start working on the next one.
