In Latin, you're right, it does mean bringing light and yes, it is considered a name for a male. However, it is more commonly associated with the devil. In fact most people think of this name as being the devil himself. If you name your child Lucifer, expect to get some very concerned looks and to explain the reasoning behind the name. I do not mean to be rude, it's just a fact.

Considering Lucifer is also the name of the devil, Satan, Beelzebub, etc.. and is portrayed in the bible and other novels and movies as male I would have to say, yes. It is a uni-sex name for the fact that it has no reference at all to any male dominance. For instance the name Ryan, in Italian it means "Little king" whereas "King" is referred to a male status. Therefore Ryan is a male name, though there are females with the name Ryan.

Lucifer is a male name, but there are lots of female versions of it (Lucy, Lucinda, Lucille, Lucienne etc). I think it would be a lovely name if it weren't for the bad reputation it has. A lot of people think it is Satan's name, but this myth actually occurred due to a mistranslation! The bible reference in question was actually referring to the planet Venus as Lucifer (the morning star, light-bringer, get it?)

Ok so you are going to name your child after the devil, thats a good way to have him teased at school when he is older. Can I suggest a second name for him. How about Lucifer Adolf really have the kid hated all his life.

NO! That is definately a boy's name. I am sure you know that is Satans given name. He was the highest, most revered of all the angels before he was cast out of heaven.
Just a little info on that name!

It's a boys name, but is associated with the Christian devil. Even if you're not religious it might be worth taking this into consideration as it may cause problems for him later in life.

Lucifer is usually a male name. Go with Lilith for a girl. ;)

No, Lucifer is not a unisex name. It is a male name.
Furthermore, it is not a popular name since it was the devil's name before he was kicked out of heaven.
so I wouldn't really name a baby that.

That could turn out to be a tad cruel. Although that would be funny if he wanted to be a preacher. Seriously, no matter what it means, don't do it. That poor child, boy or girl, is going to be given hell (no pun intended) for the rest of his/her life.
