I was having a dispute over electric issues. Is it better to keep your lights on in you apartment 24/7 whether you are there are not? Somebody told me that if you turn them on and off all of the time it actually raises your bill? I was told that 75 watt bulbs is the best. When is it best to turn your lights and tv off? If you have an electric heater is it best to turn the heat on when you get home or keep it low at all times. If somebody did not use any electricity at all for a month, how much would the meter be?

Certain utility companies have "peak" consumption time & "off peak " consumption time. Also certain utility companies have a regressive rate plan(the more electrical usage the less you charged by reaching certain "plateaus" of usage.)

Use the bulb that suits your need for illumination(filament or florescent).

If you have...Keep the heater low when nobody is home then raise it when it is occupied. Use the heater to suit your need.

If somebody...Theoretically the meter would not run. Normally the refrigerator is the only appliance that uses "measurable" electricity throughout the day (aside from an electric heater).

While light bulbs do draw a momentary surge when you first turn them on, the payback on that surge is about 5 seconds of off time. Turn them off when not in use. This applies to CF bulbs as well as standard incandescents.

Turn the head down when you leave and back up when you return. Or better yet, get an automatic setback thermostat. It will pay for itself in a few months of use.

Turn the lights off and replace as many bulbs as you can with compact fluorescent bulbs. Your utility company might also sponsor a discount on those bulbs. They did here and I got a bunch of them for only 50 cents each. Your local power company probably has a web site with lots of energy conservation tips. We have one in California called Flex Your Power.

Why not challenge your roommates to come up with a joint energy conservation plan for your apartment and make that your New Year resolution.

Ok....CUT YOUR LIGHTS OFF!

It is wasteful to leave it on and it will make your bill sky rocket.

The BEST light bulbs are the ones that are flurescent and are spiral looking...you can get them from walmart!

DO NOT leave your lights on.

And those particular light bulbs I just mentioned save energy and lower your electric and they also last for approximately 6 years!!!

If everyone in the USA went to walmart right now to buy ONE of those light bulbs, it would be like taking 1 million cars off the road...

That is amazing!

Every little bit helps...and it is also helping you save $$$$.
