Lakewood C is exactly right. Beautiful movie -- directed by John Ford. Tom Donophon was the man who shot Liberty Valance, but everybody thought it was Rance Stoddard, who got elected senator, and got Tom's girl, as a result.

"I'll show you law -- Western law!"

-- Liberty Valance, played by Lee Marvin, as he begins applying his whip to Rance Stoddard's prostrate form

This movie has a famous twist.
Jimmy Stewart thinks he shot Liberty Valance for almost the entire movie....
But John Wayne really shot him.

The character's name was Tom Donaphon (sp?), played by
John Wayne. Stewart's character (Ranse Stoddard) merely
had the false reputation of doing it.
