Stinking Mc Afee is a problem best thing to do if this is a system that you haven't set up yet is to reformat using your XP disk if you have one . That will get rid of all the crap the last owner installed then don't bother with Norton just google up AVG and install the free version you would not believe the things it cleans out I do this for people in this area all the time { you wouldn't believe the crap they download and the sites they visit }. Mc Afee is programed to be a ***** to remove and shut down your computer if you don't pay the yearly extortion fee .

You will need to remove one of the Anti-Virus. Either one of them will be fine alone, but with both of them.... They treat each other as Virus.
Turn your computer off, you may need to do it by the power button. Then power up, and use the F8 boot option to log on as administrator from safe mode. If your want to remove McAfee, you need to go to Control Panel > Add Remove Programs > Identify McAfee software there will be at least three of them with "McAfee" names. Remove all of them include the live update software. The computer will reboot again, and this time run the Norton again. You will be fine with your computer, but require a little bit of work and learn some new stuff....

If you can, you might want to perform a system restore back to first available date in the PC's system restore points, if the computer is running Windows XP or ME. That would remove Norton 360, allowing you to uninstall McAfee properly, after which you could then install Norton 360 and have only one program running. From a standpoint of programs I've worked with, though, I would not recommend Norton 360 - instead, I'd choose from the better freeware applications, listed here:
firewall:
Comodo (http://www.comodo.com), or
PC Tools (http://www.pctools.com/firewall)
Comodo recently released version 3.0 of its firewall, which adds an intrusion prevention component that's very effectively, though it does take time for it to learn your system, and requires some ongoing attention by the user to make sure programs don't get improperly block. Comodo is one of the strongest firewalls available, freeware or commercial, according to the independent testing site matousec.com.
antivirus: (listed in order of preference)
Avira (http://www.free-av.com)
AVAST! Home (http://www.avast.com)
AVG (http://free.grisoft.com)
all provide realtime protection and automatic updates; all have ICSA and VB100 certification, but Avira has been among the highest rated in tests by several respected US and UK computer publications.
antispyware:
Spyware Terminator (http://www.SpywareTerminator.com) or
Spyware Doctor (http://pack.google.com)
either one will give you good, realtime protection, along with
Ad-Aware Free (http://www.lavasoftusa.com) and
Spybot S&D (http://www.safer-networking.org) for additional removal ability.
If I had to pick one from each, I'd recommend Comodo Firewall, Avira antivirus, and Spyware Terminator.

It appears that McAfee was previously installed on the used computer. It must be completely uninstalled before installing Norton.
Shut the computer off and turn it back on and see what happens. Then uninstall McAfee and re-install Norton.
Good Luck!

First of all... stay far away from any NORTON product, if you happen to own one make sure to get Norton_Removal_Tool or it will never leave your system.(Add/Remove program doesn't do a thing to NORTON... hhmmm, i wonder why)
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039
2nd... dont use two anti-virus programs on your computer ONLY one. choose between one of these two, both work great.
AVG 7.6 http://filehippo.com/download_avg_antivirus/
or
Avast 4.6 http://filehippo.com/download_avast_antivirus/
3rd... if u need a firewall you can always go with Comodo (2.4 or 3.0) choose which version you like best

You're not stupid, just in a new area! Everyone has trouble at first, learning something new, and different! Try this answer from jeffs, here on Yahoo Answers to remove Norton 360: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20070926072530AAbHdcw Then remove Mcafee from Start>All Programs>Mcafee>Uninstall, if there is this feature. Then see if you can remove it from Start>Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs. Remove everything you see listed with Mcafee. Then remove anything you see with Norton, or Symantec. We're going to go a little deeper, and kick the crap out of 'em!(okay, delete them!) Start>All Programs>Accessories>Windows Explorer. In Windows Explorer I would like you to go up to the top headings, and click on Tools>Folder Options>View tab. Then in View tab, scroll down to "Show All Hidden Files and Folders", and click the box next to it. Then click on Apply, below,(right), and then OK. Now nothing, except files and folders Windows will not let you change, is hidden to us, and we won't mess with them. Click on the - sign next to My Documents. This closes the 'tree', so that it's easier to see what we're doing. Now click on the + sign next to My Computer>+ sign next to Local Disk (C:)>+ sign next to Program Files. If you see Mcafee, and/or Norton/Symantec, right-click in the middle of the name. This will 'pop' up a small window with delete being one of the features. Guess what we're going to do now? That's right, Delete them, send them to the Recycle Bin, and later delete them from the Recycle Bin,(don't forget!). If their 'shortcut key' is on your desktop, and/or in All Programs, right-click, delete them. Go to Recycle Bin, and delete them again. Now I suggest for security software AVG from Grisoft, and Spybot Search & Destroy. They're compatible, both can be installed on your computer at the same time. Spybot only run's when you tell it to,(it's just a preference of mine, use some security program though, just not Mcafee, or Norton!) When this is all cleared up, go to Start>Control Panel>Performance and Maintenance>Free Up Harddisk Space.(Category View, some people run Classic view) Yes to C: Drive, and Yes you want to do it.(answers to the questions). Also Defragment your harddrive. Start>Control Panel>Performance and Maintenance>Rearrange Items on Your Harddrive to make Programs Run Faster. EDIT: I hope this is some 'flavor ' of WinXP, as these directions apply to XP. Win98, or 2000, or WinMe is different!
