He could have done anything he wanted with the franchise and he chooses to go back in time with a timeline that doesn't work. Young Kirk and Spock, Sulu and Chekov, etc... When Kirk was in the academy Chekov was in diapers. This movie is going to be a disaster and possibly end the franchise.

When I say the time line doesn't work, I mean that the crew were all different ages and would not have been at the academy together. The storyline is implausible. They should have gone forward in time. The Enterprise-J or something. Could have had some next gen continuity with Data in command, etc...

The only reason that anyone tampers with a long running series.

He is in it for the easy money for a ready audience still wanting a Star Trek fix and they are willing to take anything in the hope that it will be as good as the original series which it will not be but if you can't go forward then you have to go back and that is what he is doing.

JJ Abrams is going back to the beginning for a reason. He is trying to answer various questions in the TOS (the original series) era that were never tackled on air. There is also the fact that TOS is where Paramount had the most sucess. After celebrating its 40th anniversary, it was thought a good idea to go back to waht made it a hit in the first place. Leonard Nimoy is also apart of this new movie and Zach Quinto (as well as othe other younger stars) have bee brought in to revamp the francise with a younger audience. Star Trek TOS was loved because of the characters and their interactions with one another. If JJ is successful in recreating what Gene Roddenberry once had, then that will mean the same greatness today for newer, younger fans. I am confident that JJ and Leonard Nimoy know what they are doing and can't wait to see the finish product.

From what I can recall... this era is what launched Star Trek into a mega-hit! I have faith in the fact that JJ cannot ruin Star Trek anymore than Rick Berman did. Complaining about JJ isn't going to get Shatner hired into the cast as well.

You may be right.

However, I have been a fan of Star Trek since it has started.
After five (?) series, it has become quite boring.

It needs a new start. Kinda like Battlestar Galactica, Superman, Batman, ...

Wasn't it pretty much destroyed w/ the 3rd o 5th movie?

Sylar's playing Spock, so it can't be too bad, huh?
