In my life it plays a big role. I'm a social worker. It's in me to help those who need help . I don't know why it's instinctual, or why it would effect me more or less than others though. And, in social work we have awful rules about who we can help and how we can help them. But away from my job, I can help whomever I would naturally help.
I think it's normal for people to see a need and to want to fill it. I see it online and in real life everyday.

I don't think altruism plays a role in any person's life. I believe there is at least a miniscule hint of a selfish motive that drives everything a person does. Even if you're devoted to making other people happy, it would only be because you find joy in making other people happy. Nobody would do something without the hope of earning some reward for doing so.

I believe altruism is just a normal part of my everyday life...from raising my children to smiling at someone who looks like they need ed it,to helping out people in need..for example,I recently sent a care package to a couple of children I heard were having a really hard life..full of abuse and being shipped from one parent to another..
I volunteer my time when I can to help in my community
I just feel it's something that has always been apart of my life....I have just never thought much about it.
I never look for any kind of reward or any praise..for a matter of fact alot of what I have done goes unnoticed and this is the first time I have ever really talked about this.
I have always been the kind of person to look for people in need.Just because I want to

I am not here for the points..but in my opinion I would give the altruism 10 points to the social worker. The reason being is because ,social workers have a really tough job. They have to see families struggle and neglected children eveyday and they are supposed to take care of them in only what the government allows them. But,I have met a few social workers in my time who say piddle on the government and help out families in need on their own time as well.I personally have looked up to social workers all my life,I was abused as a child by my stepdad and it was a social worker that convinced my mom to believe my siblings and myself were telling her the truth about the abuse and to leave the man. So,altruism or not....I would award a social worker the 10 points

I agree with Anthony Spears: "I don't think altruism plays a role in any person's life". I think that the idea that we are naturally good is so attractive and pleasing to us that we hide our inner motives from ourselves. Generally, we help others because it makes us feel good inside and we feel good inside because society has trained us in acceptable behavior from the time we were infants.

Well, I think it's pretty unselfish of me to devote so much time to my fellow P&Sers when I could be out there herding wildebeast or something. ;-)
