Hi i am currently in the 11th grade in highschool. i have a 4.4 gpa and got a 29 on the ACT. i know i can probably get into a decent college with these statistics, but no schools here in California really appeal to me at all. I don't like any of the UC schools much, and there's nowhere else that really appeals to me. I was wondering what some good, close alternatives are. But, i kind of want to go to a college out-of-state. would it be hard to adjust? but my mom doesn't want me to go out of state but I kinda want to...

I've seen everything from students who really thrived when out of state to those who dropped out because they were too homesick. It really depends on how used you are to being independent, and on the type of relationship you have with your family.

I'm curious, though. There are so many schools in California, how can you not like any of them but assume you will like the ones elsewhere better? Keep in mind that if you are limiting yourself to UCs because of cost that you would have to pay out-of-state tuition anywhere else, so the costs would be a lot higher for you. If cost isn't an issue, have you looked at possibilities like the Claremont Colleges? In many ways, they are more like some of the elite liberal arts schools back East.

If you really want to go out of state, there isn't much very close that is all that good. You could look into the University of Arizona, which is a reasonably good school (although not as good academically as the better UCs). In Oregon, there is Reed College, which is very good, but only appropriate for some kinds of students, as it is pretty off-beat for most. The University of Oregon has some good programs, as does UNR (the University of Nevada Reno).

It is kind of hard if you have a really good relationship with ur mom and havent been away from home. But you'll eventually get use to it.
