I certainly don't foresee betta food harming goldfish and if they are so hungry that they are eating eachother, I'd suggest feeding them what ever you have available. Most fish foods are made of the same basic ingredients and vary only in texture, shape, etc. Betta food does have some extra ingredients sometimes to keep the fish brightly colored, but none of those ingredients would harm a goldfish.

EDIT: As two other people have mentioned, if you've only not been feeding them a day or two, there's something else going on. How long have you had the fish together, how many are there, and what size aquarium are they in? Not enough room might be one explanation. Also, if you've had one alone for a while and then added another fish to the aquarium, the first fish, being used to having all the terrritory to him/herself may become hostile.

Are any of the fish ill (or showing signs of being ill)? If so, you should seperate them.

In any case, I'd say, make sure you watch them carefully, feed them whatever you have available (even if it's betta food), and seperate them so that they cannot continue harming eachother.

Betta food is made up of mostly insects and sometimes other fish. It's a carnivores diet basically as they are strict carnivores. Goldfish fall into the carp family and will eat anything. They do need to have some vegetation in their diet but the betta food will not harm them at all.

ADD ON: I also agree with betta4christ. Goldfish can actually go a couple of weeks without any food so if you've been feeding them daily up until now, something else is going on. What size tank do you have them in? Goldfish produce twice as much waste as your average fish and therefore need twice as much space as your average fish (2-3gallons per inch of fish so they should be in a tank that's at least 10 gallons based on the number and sizes of your fish). Also keep in mind that 10gallons is only sufficient for a short while. Goldfish can live up to 25-30 years and grow to over 12" in length. By keeping them in a smaller tank - their growth will be stunted and when they are not able to grow anymore - they just die.

With every day pass, our country is getting into more and more trouble. The inflation, unemployment and falling value of dollar are the main concern for our Government but authorities are just sleeping, they don’t want to face the fact. Media is also involve in it, they are force to stop showing the real economic situation to the people. I start getting more concern about my future as well as my family after watching the response of our Government for the people that affected by hurricane Katrina.

no, bettas need betta food. they could deal with general tropical food, but betta food is made specially for them to optimize health. most bettas prefer pellets, which also help keep the water from getting cloudy. as a treat you can feed him freeze dried blood worms a few times a week. also, NO FISH should be kept in a bowl. it is cruel. bettas, just like any other fish, produce waste. therefore, just like any other fish, bettas NEED a filter. without a filter levels of ammonia, and nitrate build up super fast. it's also hard to keep pH where it should be. no to mention bettas are TROPICAL fish, they need temps around 75-80degrees. this is impossible to obtain in a bowl unless you always keep your house at 80degrees. why not get your betta a cheap 5 gallon tank, a filter, a heater and some plants? he'd be much happier and it doesn't really take up more room than a bowl. or, you could get a 10gallon tank and put a few other tropical fish in with him. a tiny school of colorful fish looks beautiful paired with a betta. it is a common misconception that bettas can't be kept with any fish. males can't be kept with other bettas, females CAN be kept with other females, and males can be kep t with most slower, passive tropical fish. as long as the other fish don't have flowy fins that could be mistaken for a betta he will do fine with them and you'd actually have to watch out for the other fish nipping his fins more than him attacking them. good tank mates include slower tetras tetras tend to be fin nippers, so if they're slow the betta can still get away, fast ones will bully bettas), mollies, platies, swordtails, ect... so PLEASE reconsider the bowl.

It is perfectly fine to feed your goldfish betta food. If you compare ingredients you will find them very similar.

There is no problem with this. But go back to what your goldfish are used to. Their food is cheap - a couple bucks for a couple months of food.

Is ok to feed gold fish betta food, but if they are eating each other thats not a sign of hunger but of panic, one of your gold fish is dieing. Feed them betta food, if they keep eating each other separate them.

Hi Krystl, Apoligies if I am misunderstanding you but from the tone of your question you don't sound like you should be keeping pets at all, firstly you don't appear to have done any research [It would have been far easier to type 'Goldfish Diet' into Google than to post on here] & secondly you make flippant remarks about flushing them as if they were disposable items. The only crime Goldfish have ever committed is to be cheap & plentiful, please try to see them as individual beings who need care & respect.

Betta food will be adequate for a day or so but ideally Goldfish enjoy cooked, shelled peas, cooked broccoli, cooked spinach, frozen bloodworms, Frozen brine shrimp, slices of citrus fruit & soft boiled rice. All of the above should be fed in moderation & in conjunction with a good quality sinking pellet such as Hikari or Pro Gold.

Goldfish are carp. They can eat almost anything and thrive.
