1. Supposing you open a new word document and type something. Now, if you want to give it a name, then you select the option of 'save as'. Then you get a pop up window in which you can give a name and select the storage location for that file., and you continue typing. If your version is not set to auto-save, then whenever you click on 'save' then the contents of the file as they exist are saved. Of course, you can click on the 'floppy' icon for this.
But in midle of the work, instead of clicking on 'save', if you click on 'save as' , the pop up window appears again. This ime you can give the file a different name and now a new file is created with updated work. (note that your old file is not deleted).
Simply put, when selecting name and storage location for a file, use 'save as' and occasionaly while working click 'save' to update your work, to prevent dataloss due to power failure

2. When you close a messenger, the main window of the messenger dissapears, but the icon sits on your taskbar. But when you 'exit' the application/ messenger, the application program is terminated.. Once you exit, you wil have to re-login or re-open the program if you want to use it.

Save - the save your work under the filename currently active.
Save as - save your work, but you will be prompted to provide a file name to use.

At work we have these saved templates. Like "sample quote." We load "sample quote", we edit it, then we use Save AS to save it under the customer's name.
