I grew up on a large property in south-west Queensland. About 28 years ago, my brother and I were riding our motorbikes at night, and drove past a deserted house on the property. Hanging over one of the window sills was a largish, hairy animal, about 4 feet long. It definitely was no known Australian animal. I had lived there all my life and seen every large animal that lived in that area. This animal looked something like a sloth. I'd have to say it was really scary looking, and we actually just mentioned it to each and took off. I really wish we'd stayed for a better look now.
Has anyone ever heard of any undiscovered animal that looks anything like this? The properties are big where I grew up....in the tens of thousands of acres and bigger, so this thing may be a very rare animal or maybe an escapee from somewhere, although from where I couldn't imagine.
Anyone heard any whispers of an animal like this? Thanks in advance to anyone who answers.

Thanks for replying, badmoon. No, I don't believe the animal was a sloth, but was similar to one. Re: whether people would have heard of the animal if it was undiscovered, there are other animals in Aust. that people say they have seen but have not been officially recorded because they haven't been seen by the right people. Just thought someone here in Aust. might have seen one of these things.
I've only told one person about this creature in my entire life. lol Don't want people to think I'm crazy.

If the animal were "undiscovered", we wouldn't know about it, but here are some descriptions and photos of animals similar to sloths to help you identify your mystery creature.

First, there are two types of sloths, two-toed and three-toed. Three-toed sloths are larger, and generally gray-brown with a hue of green due to the algae that grows on their back. Two-toed sloths move more quickly and are brownish with hairless faces. Neither sloth has more than a stump for tail. Both unfortunately reside in upper South America.

The spotted phalanger (or cuscus) is my best bet, and it's 2 feet long sans prehensile tail. It's a nocturnal marsupial related to possums that's very slow-moving like sloths, has a monkeylike face, and can be white, gray, or rust with light blotches. It's found in upper Australia and also possibly vulnerable, so would be considered rare.

I may as well throw in the endangered sloth bear due to its namesake, but this is a highly unlikely candidate because it resides in India and is 1.5 meters long.

Hope one of these hits its mark.
