This is a highly over-exaggerated and common misconception that has, unfortunately, been propagated by movies like "Waiting".

Having worked in kitchens for as long as I have, and with as many chefs and cooks as I have, I have NEVER seen ANY of the cooks contaminate the customers food in ANY way, shape or form. Sure, an order coming back can be irritating - it just means that there's more work that needs to be done. However, if it's a legitimate complaint (undercooked, cold, made wrong, etc.) we'll fix it. We won't be happy about it, but we're not going to spit in it or blow or nose in it or anything like that.

To paraphrase one of the other answerers, doing something like that is essentially a death sentence. If you're caught, the chances that you'd be able to get a restaurant job again would be nil - and there would likely be legal ramifications, as well.

However... if it's that much of a concern to you, my only suggestion would be to cook for yourself, at home.

That's hardly a common practice...Just think about it, there are numerous people in a kitchen of a restaurant. The types of behavior you are describing is so obnoxious, that the person would most certainly be reported. And obviously, management would frown on that kind of activity.

That's not to say it doesn't happen, but I have never heard of it happening except in the case of where the customer P/O'ed the waitress or when the customer was an authority figure...like a cop...and some juvenile in the back had a bone to pick with them. But again they were caught and fired...if not worse.

I worked in the restaurant industry for 12 years and the only time I ever heard or saw something like that was a cook spit on another employees sandwich. He was fired and was arrested. He will never work in the food industry again.

You can never "stop" it from happening. Or know where to go to not have it happen. You have to "trust" I cant even think about it or I wouold never eat out.

When I waitressed MANY years ago, I had my boyfriend st the time tell me "dont serve the Chicken noodle soup" the bosses son in law was pissed at him so he pissed in the soup.

I also witnessed ppl drop raw chicken on the kitchen floor and cook it. I have also heard stories of places where kids who worked there thought it would be funning to pick thier nose and place it on burger.. Gross, but there are sick and disturbed ppl in the world!

I have heard about thing like this happening and looked at some show on tv where people have been caught on video doing this type of stuff. I guess if you want to eat out thats just a chance you have to take.

Ive heard of that sometimes. The workers are much more likely to do that if the customer complains and sends back their order. So if you dont want that to happen just be happy with what you get the first time.

When we see them spit and piss on our food we just rub their tip between our butt cheeks before we leave it and a couple of cockroaches on the table. Touche, heh?

Be nice and civil to whoever serves you. Chat with them etc - dont go to maccy d's or fast food joints where they hate EVERYONE cos yes they do do horrible things to your food, i know people who worked in them an they admit to doing it themselves. In a fastfood chain here in England, 6 different types of semen was found in the mayonnaise.

i think the only time they spit on your food is if you're rude to them when ordering. they never piss on it, otherwise you would be dead, have hepatitis, or you would notice.
If you are afraid of this happening then i guess you will have to prepare your own food.
