Phil Spector wrote the song in 1958. He took the words from his father's tombstone that read, "To Know Him...Was To Love Him. (Phil's father committed suicide in 1949 when Phil was very young) He changed the word "was" to "is" & the song was then recorded by the Teddy Bears. Three million copies of the song were sold before the Christmas of 1958.
P.S. Dolly Parton did not write the song.

Emmy Lou Harris sang a rendition of this song. Don't believe that she is from the mountains of Tennessee though.

Have to agree with ShortStuff...and I still love the original version sung by the Teddy Bears. Once in a while we'll catch it on an oldies station, but not often enough!
