I am looking to purchase a new desktop computer, all these specs are confusing to me, where can I go to learn what all these specs mean or stand for so that I can understand them and help me make a decision.

Watch the ads in the Sunday paper. Here, we get ads with in-store specials from Best Buy, Office Max, Office Depot, Circuit City -- each offering spectacular sales. Supplies are limited, but if you don't mind getting there before the store opens and waiting, you can get a really good deal.

Last week, our paper features a Dell desktop, basic features, for $299.

By watching the ads and waiting for a deal, I bought a Dell 2400 and a Dell 3000 for $299 each and free shipping. Dell is also pretty good with support.

Check Dell and HP websites for refurbished. Sometimes you can get a real good deal on a refurbished computer. They go fast so you have to keep checking in.

An 80mb hard drive, with 1G memory will be sufficient for you if you are not into games, movies, web cams, etc. - all those goodies.

Buying a pc could be overwhelming certainly even for a nerd. I would start off by making a mental note as to what will you be using this computer for ie school ,work / gaming, pictures editing your videos Photoshop/ going online, shopping checking email chatting / also figure out how much you want to spend. once you have these down then you can better select a pc
just to give you a simple run down

Hard drive - amount or capacity to store things
Processor - the brain part of the computer
RAM -memory the more the better look at it in terms of reflex’s
You don't want a sumo wrestler you want some thing like Bruce lee.
Video card - card responsible for showing video and images’ get a one with its own memory.

A ideal pc would be something with
Processr-(Pentium) ( AMD 3.0
RAM of 1GB
HD of 300
And video card of 256 or 512 ,
again the more things for the least money is what you should go for
get the media edtion

The two major things you need to take into consideration are how YOU will use it and your budget. And stick to it (don't let the "wouldn't it be nice if you could video conference.." sales pitch sway you if you won't use it REGULARLY).

If you're just using it to surf the web, play online games and write letters or print pictures, you can get a great PC under $400 (512mb ram). If you're a hardcore gamer or heavy duty graphics or database person, you'll need at least 1 gig of RAM. That's the very basic and you MUST stick to (all places will try to upsell you features you absolutely don't need, just like the Scotchguard on olefin carpets). The usual department store employees may not be working on commission, but their department earns credential for selling specific products. All you have to do is ask them to entirely duplicate the environment (such as printing) across all machines you are considering, chances are, a lot of them just aren't able to be connected to do so. They're NOT entirely unbiased, (the product reps come in and SELL *the salespeople* first so that they sell more of their product).

www.cnet.com has reviews and breaks it down. Unbiased. Also check epinions.com before making your final selection (essentially, a free "consumers guide"). Then, use Shopzilla to find the best price and best source.

Call Gateway or Dell. I always advise against buying from a department or electronics store because you always have to buy the whole package of software that contains a lot of crap you dont need. I suggest have Gateway build you one with your specs. I use gateways and have not had any problems with the last three as I have with HP. Use the extra money for memory, larger hard drive and whatever else you might NEED not what they want you to have

all of these are free to use::
www.avast.com for antivirus
www.spybot.com for spyware
Windows firewall.
Disc cleanup then defrag. Get rid of all the music, games and pictures. You can saave the pictures on your Yahoo mail, you can listen to the radio online or at home, and you can play games online without downloading.

It extremely relies upon on what you want to do with it (video clips and video games will require greater standards) and the financial supplies you're prepared to apply. Upgrading the RAM to 2 or 4 GB is a greater low priced thank you to strengthen overall performance. It has a twin center processor so because it somewhat is a vast plus. in case you utilize it for song, internet surfing, e mail, and so on. it somewhat is probable superb the way it somewhat is, or with some advancements. merely relies upon on what you wanna do..

Try the Kim Kommando web page. She has a lot of easy to understand information on her site. You can also go to a bookstore and get PCs for Dummies (no offense)

Stop in at your local Best Buy or Circuit City. They will explain everything to you and suggest the best for your price range. Plus, they don't get commission so you know that they aren't just trying to sell the most expensive one.
