There are many many movies that insult Christianity and American values (including the military). The most recent is the Golden Compass.

They continue to make anti military movies like Redacted that smear our military and alienate Americans.

Americans show they reject these kinds of movies, yet Hollywood continues to put them out.

Then you have Passion of the Christ, which was a tremendous success. Also see Chronicles of Narnia. Christian themed movies do well, while anti Christian ones bomb.

I see the same in television. I cannot count all the shows that I refuse to watch because of the way conservative values are taunted.

I do not understand how they do not get this.

Anti Christian and anti military movies are almost guaranteed to get good ratings from the critics. It's fashionable now a days to bash those two institutions since for the most part the can't talk back in their defense. My custom is to see what the critics don't like then go and rent them or out right buy them. I haven't been disappointed yet. the media strives to put down anything that smacks of religion, especially Christianity, and any movie that portrays the American Fighting Man as anything other than a drugged out lazy killer. They seem to forget that those fighting men defend their very right to ditz them. Does this sound familiar, "I may not agree with them but I will give up my life to preserve their right to say it?" The only Vietnam movie I can stomach is "We Were Soldiers". Okay my answer is not exactly what anyone wants to hear but there it is, I defended the right of the hippies to do what they did and now my son is defending the right of people now a days to make movies about Abu Grahb.

Really, exactly how is The Golden Compass anti-Christian? The last time I checked, an angel, (The Authority) who fools the masses into believing that he is a god in a parallel universe, being killed, isn't an affront to Christian values.

Unless your faith is that weak of course...

Maybe the movie isn't doing well because it just feels like another Lord of the Rings, another Narnia.

Why ? Because Follywood see`s themselves as liberal socialist elitist god`s ! They consider themselves above all the rules` and regulations` of common decency ! They could care less about how much money their left wing bias` movies lose , because they can write it off on their taxes , and possibly be reimbursed by the taxpayer funded "" National Association of the Arts`"" !!

The movie was a HORRIBLE depiction of a wildly popular book; perhaps that is why it is bombing! Furthermore--what, in your opinion, is so "anti-Christian" about The Golden Compass?

My husband and I were talking about this earlier and he brought up the excellent point that people seem to be attacking this movie because "God" in it is devalued and rejected; however, the book is FICTIONAL! How can ANY book, (other than the Bible) claim to know something about what OUR God is (or isn't)? As practicing Christians ourselves, we did not feel this movie impacted our beliefs in any way. We understand that it is all make-believe ;)

I don't think it is appropriate to put "Golden Compass" in the same category as "Redacted," among others.

I put "Golden Compass" in the same group as "Harry Potter" and "Lord of the Rings." Those with extremely strong Christian beliefs might feel threatened, but most people won't.

Nobody makes a movie with the intention of having it bomb; movies are made to make money. I have not seen Golden Compass (and don't intend to -- the reviews are unfavorable), but it is almost certainly intended as an adventure tale, and it has nothing to do with religion.

this movie in particular, and the book as well, does nothing to insult Christian or American values (the story is British)

it isn't until the third part of the series when they spring the God stuff on the reader

First of all, it hasn't bombed. Second, what it shows the religious right's intolerance to freedom of expression, which is what this country was founded on, along with freedom of religion ( or lack of religion). As long as the movie praises god and jesus and mary and joseph and their camels and their sheep, the religious right have no problems. But as soon as an art form reflects something other than a positive image of god ( whatever that is) then you guys get all upset over THAT freedom of expression. I'll tell you what, we will stop making movies that challenge religious mindwashing and religious doctrine, if all the churches close, the ministers and pastors and Rabbis and Fathers all shut up, including you of the religious right - fair deal? In exchange for you losing your freedom of expression about the "positives" or religion and god those of us that don't believe will also relinguish our opinions and rights to speak. Don't like that do you? You only enjoy freedom of expression as long as it supports your religious beliefs. You sound like the Muslims and the Islamists, our beliefs or no belief.
