She wasn't a angel when she was here either. She had affairs with married men but somehow nobody cares about that. Do you think if a singer today passed young would she have that same impact.

I just have to comment of Munya's response... Elvis is not on his way to achieving Marilyn Monroe status. While I do like and respect Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley is way above and beyond her. Marilyn was the epitome of beauty and was a sucessful actress but Elvis was the King of Rock and Roll. To compare and say Elvis is not as legendary as Marilyn Monroe is nonsense and incorrect.

From Wikipedia:
Elvis Presley was an American rock, pop, gospel and country singer whose professional career spanned from 1954 until his death in 1977. Posthumously, he has continued to sell records in large numbers, reaching number 1 on both singles and album charts around the world. Presley is reported to have sold over one billion singles and albums, which would make him the biggest-selling solo artist of all time.As of 2007, over a quarter century after his death, Presley still holds the top spot for best-selling solo artist in U.S. history, according to the RIAA.

There is practically no-one on who doesn't know the name "Elvis", even people in different countries who don't even speak english have come to Graceland and are big fans of his.

*The Beatles are the best selling band of all time but Elvis is the best selling solo artist of all time.

Because the accomplishments she made then were very unheard of, and the impact she had on people were ground breaking at the time. The fact that she had affairs with married men was shocking to people, thus furthering her sex symbol status. Keep in mind that she was popular at a time when the tv networks did not allow married couples to be shown in bed together, so her sexual exploits were good gossip. Besides, she was sleeping with the prz and his brother, and many beieve she was going to blow the whistle about something major, so people still speculate about that. As far as a singer today having the same impact- imho, probably not. Hardly anyhting shocks me anymore, so it would have to be very intringuing for me to even care.

I think it is because of what she is--- a symbol of something completely revolutionary to that time. She was a sex symbol. As fascinating as the Beatles.
As lasting as Fords Mustang.
Like Elvis is a rock and roll symbol. It was New and Bold.
And nobody can do introduce the same thing twice.

(Just an interesting thought...If you notice (no offense to anyone) a lot of middle age and older people---they are the ones still taken up with that type of stuff.)

I think one way to put it is that she represented an entire decade as the preeminent blond bombshell. She was to the Fifties like an Ursula Andress might have been to the Sixties, like Farrah Fawcett was to the late Seventies, and so forth.

Up til today, of course, where our choices seem to be Anna Nicole Smith, Britney/Christina/Jessica, and Paris Hilton.

She was one of a kind. No one has even come close. She was an actress not a singer. She did sing a few times but like I said, she wasn't a singer.

She was (is) a glamour icon. Elvis is still popular for the same reason.

Did you know that she had six toes on one foot?! Yup!

She was popular because she was beautiful. Look at Paris. She isn't even beautiful and has done nothing but get drunk to be famous, yet she has preteens looking up to her.

If she's not shown on the tv or magazines anymore, the young one wouldn't give a damn.
