The Inspirion range is aimed at general consumers and the XPS is targeted at gamers.

The XPS laptop generally has a flashy skin and the Inspiron is understated.

Not being a flashy sort I would maybe go for the Inspiron but the XPS M1330 and I where nearly one. It was just what I was looking for.

Small, light and powerful. Unfortunately I needed a laptop now and there was a 4 week waiting list at the time.

I got a Vaio SZ5 instead and I'm typing this on it now.

Very happy with it as I'm sure you will be with an Inspiron or an XPS.

Good luck with your new purchase.

I am sorry I don't have like a fact sheet to give you to tell you the differences between both of them but I have an Inspiron and I love it so far no major problems at all. Sorry I can't help you more but I can give you personal use and it is pretty easy and not to heavy either, the processor is pretty fast and dell has pretty good support in many different ways.

Difference Between a Laptop and a Notebook
Source: http://whitecapcomputer.com/newsletter/articles/notebook_vs_laptop.htm

Laptop computers are somewhat larger than notebooks and will accommodate a built-in disk drive unit and; optionally, a floppy drive unit. That is, a CD ROM drive is either built into the unit or the unit has a built-in bay that will accommodate a removable CD ROM drive.
Notebook computers will allow you to attach, via cable, a CD ROM drive. Since the drive is not built into the unit, notebooks are smaller and lighter than laptops. Hence, a notebook is an ultra small laptop. Another way to look at it is a notebook is about the size (or a little larger than) of a real [binder] notebook.
