My 2000 Honda Civic LX has always been very quiet, but during the last year it sounds very loud, and the sound comes from the front of the car, I've checked the muffler and got under the car there's no loud noise from there, it is on the front under the hood, also there is no leaks or anything, what I do know it's that the A/C compressor is broken, could that be the problem? Or the exhaust manifold probably? I would say the loudest noise comes when between 20mph and 35mph. The car has 70,000 and I haven't changed the timing belt yet since manual says 105,000. Thank you for your help.

This sounds like a problem in the exhaust system. The exhaust system consists of more than just a muffler. Rather than guessing, take the car to a shop and have it put on the lift, and the entire exhaust system checked for leaks!

While it is in the air, they can look for other problems that may be causing the noise too.

Check for cracks on the underside of the exhaust manifold, the noise will be most pronounced when cold but when the engine warms up the cracks somewhat close and you should be able to hear a different soud warm to cold

sounds like the exhaust manifold gasket. possibly the flex pipe. since it is located rite below manifold. if im not mistaken the egr tube is in that area as well.

start it up cold and run you hand around the exhaust, but don't touch it. You should be able to feel the exhaust come out. It's prolly just the gasket.

Possibly a bad fan clutch? I know for a fact (at least on American cars) they ROAR when accelerating or starting.
