Has anyone ever calculated this?

I integrated the apparent magnitudes of the 90 brightest stars, which range from -1.47 for Sirius to +2.5, with the total apparent magnitude being -3.58.

The formula being used is this one:

TMAG = 4.75 - 2.5 log { SUM[i=1,n] 10^[ (4.75 - MAGi) / 2.5 ] }

where...
TMAG = the integrated apparent magnitude
MAGi = the apparent magnitude of the ith star

Then I added 180 stars of magnitude +3.0, which brightened the total to -3.96.

Then I added 540 stars of magnitude +4.0, getting -4.29.
Then I added 1620 stars of magnitude +5.0, getting -4.58.
Then I added 4860 stars of magnitude +6.0, getting -4.86.
Then I added 14580 stars of magnitude +7.0, getting -5.11
Then I added 43740 stars of magnitude +8.0, getting -5.35.
Then I added 93600 stars of magnitude +9.0, getting -5.53.

At this point, I'm going to say "Heck with careful estimation, I'm going to guess" that the integrated magnitude of all the stars in the sky is -6.5.

Let us replace all the stars in the sky by a single imaginary star at a distance of 10 parsecs, having an absolute magnitude of -6.5. Such a star would have a luminosity, L, found from

L = (3.826E+26 W) 10^{ (4.75 + 6.5) / 2.5 }
L = 1.210E+31 watts

The flux of that power at a distance of 10 parsecs would be

flux = L / [ 4 pi (10 parsecs)^2 ]
flux = 1.012E-5 W/m^2

Note that this flux from all the stars is only about 3/8 as much as the flux from the cosmic background radiation (2.7E-5 W/m^2).

Earth's cross section, A, is

A = pi (6.378E+6 m)^2
A = 1.278E+14 m^2

So the power that Earth intercepts from all the stars, other than the sun, is hereby estimated to be...

P = A flux = 1.3 gigawatts

Edit: I found a reference (see sources) that said that the integrated magnitude of all the stars, other than the sun, is -6.7. My guess was very close! The slightly increased brightness brings about these revisions:

L = 1.455E+31 watts
flux = 1.217E-5 W/m^2
P = 1.55 gigawatts

I've never heard of it being done, but you can estimate the thermal flux from the entire universe fairly easily.

The Stefan-Bolzman law goes that P = sigma * A * T^4.
now sigma = 5.67*10^(-8) [SI]. Lets assume that A = 1 m^2 and the temperature of the universe is 2.7 Kelvin, then

P = 27 microwatts per square meter. For comparison, the sun delivers about 1100 watts per square meter - that's 400 million times more.

I am certain that someone has calculated this. It is from such estimates that astronomers have concluded that there must be some unseen matter (a.k.a. dark matter) to explain the total gravity of galaxies.

However, I have not found the actual calculation or result (at least, not yet)

---

The flux of solar energy from the Sun, at Earth's position, is 1370 W/m^2.
Multiply that by the cross-section (area of a disc of Earth's radius) to find out the total number of Watts intercepted by Earth.

1370 W/m^2 corresponds to a magnitude of -26.78

The magnitude scale is geometric, with each magnitude step corresponding to a factor of exactly the fifth root of 100 (approx. 2.5119).

Thus, the flux we get from a star of magnitude 0 (e.g., Vega) is 1370 W/m^2 divided by [the (fifth root of 100) raised to the power 26.78].

The flux from Vega is approximately 2.66x10^-8 W/m^2 (or, if you wish to use square kilometres, 0.0266 W/km^2).

With a cross-section of 127.52 million square kilometres, the Earth intercepts almost 3.4 million Watts from Vega. If we assume the albedo to be the same at this feeble level, then 37% is reflected back to space and only 63% is retained (a little over 2 million W, or one third of one milli-Watt per person.

The flux from a star of magnitude 5 would be 100 times less, at 0.000266 W/m^2, or 20,000 W retained for the entie planet (after albedo reflection).

I will let you find out how many stars of each magnitude, the flux for each, and the sum for all of them.

There is a list of the 300 brightest stars (apparent magnitudes, as seen from Earth) listed at
http://www.atlasoftheuniverse.com/stars.html
It goes to magnitude 3.54
After that, I suggest that you 'bin' the stars in steps:
4 for 3.55 to 4.5
5 for 4.51 to 5.5
etc.
and use an approximate number of stars within each group.

-----

27 microWatts would be from the CMB radiation, not from the sum of all the stars that are close enough to us to "bathe" us in their energy.

I guess no one will calculate this...we dont even know how many stars are there in the sky...billions? trillions? who knows? these are just figures on the books...

Column 1: Approximate rank of the star in order of apparent magnitude.
Column 2: Bayer name for the star.
Column 3: Proper name of the star. Usually a weird arabic name. :)
Column 4: Right Ascension in hours and minutes for epoch 2000.
Column 5: Declination in degrees for epoch 2000.
Column 6: Galactic longitude of the star.
Column 7: Galactic latitude of the star.
Column 8: Spectral classification of the main stars in the system.
Column 9: Apparent visual magnitude of the star. A letter 'v' means the magnitude varies by
more than 0.1. A letter 'e' means that the star is an eclipsing binary.
Column 10: Absolute magnitude of the star. A letter 'v' means the magnitude varies by more
than 0.1.
Column 11: The Hipparcos parallax of the star (milli-arcseconds).
Column 12: The error in the parallax (milli-arcseconds).
Column 13: The distance in light years (=3.2616/parallax).
