When I was going through a divorce almost 5 years ago, my lawyer recommended I see a shrink. It wasn't because I had "head" problems, but I needed to show some expenses on my part since I made more money than my ex. Anyways, my best friend(of 25 years) had already been single for a few years and she was into drinking and one night stands. She couldn't wait until we started partying together again.I went out a few times with her, but I knew that lifestyle was not for me, but I didn't know how to get out of it. My shrink said some people are toxic and no matter how long you have known them, you have to keep away from them to stay healthy. I finally told my friend that we were at different places in our lives right now, and I needed some space, because I could not do the night life. I told her I would be willing to go shopping or lay by the pool during the day if she needed me to talk. But, she has cut all ties with me. It makes me sad, but a big part of me is relieved.

Just gradually stop calling or returning calls. When they ask you to go out with them tell them that you are not into that scene. Be honest and tell them that you are not interested in being around drugs. I would not rule out the sex and rock and roll though.

Be honest and tell her you love her, and your moving on because you don't intend to live the life style she is. It's destructive, and you have better things to do and places to go. Then stay away. You are smart because you see what has happened! Get while the getting is good. You won't be sorry. Good Luck! Have a very Merry Christmas!

You don't have to be mean but you must be firm when you tell the old friend that you two no longer have anything in common. Keep phone calls brief, don't meet her for lunch, don't send her a Christmas card or emails. Cut it off. I had to drop an old friend too. I could tolerate her wild ways when we were young but just don't have the patience to listen to her crap anymore. I don't hate her, just don't want to have anything to do with her.

You just say goodbye. The explanation you gave us is the best ever. It's the truth and straight to the point. You are too mature to deal with this and you don't have to. Smart woman!

Just do it. Not a really easy or nice way to go about it. Ignore her calls, stop spending time with her, try not to go to parties and events where you know she'll be. It won't be nice and it might not be pretty, but if that's what you need to do then just get it over with.

I can't relate, none of my friends do that, or ever did.
But I do work with a Drug Rehab place, and you need to be straight, but gentle, and tell her you can't go on seeing her. Maybe that will help her get her life together.

Just do it...don't let it stress you out thinking and worrying what to say.
Just tell her you don't want to be around any of the above.
A long time friend would be difficult but your better off with out
her around.
