Okay, FINE, I’ll stop calling you a literalist!
You physicists have *wild* dreams. Although I wonder: what are the psychological implications of inventing a scale on which we don’t rate? I can’t decide if that’s a cynical analysis of the present, a hopeful outlook for the future, or simple realism. Though I suppose, since you physicists are all Type 3’s in disguise, the scale makes perfect sense. ;-)
I don’t know where to begin, my imagination kept spiraling into space, and I was forced to rewind at least six times. First of all, I can’t believe Madonna and Arrr-nold are our planetary culture. Something, somewhere, has gone seriously, seriously wrong. Second, I don’t know if I agree that English and Rap Music will rule the Earth. Look at the value of the Dollar—our little throne time may already have peaked.
But those are just side issues; what a wonderful idea, that the progress of civilization hinges not on this-field-of-research or that-unsolvable-problem, but on Tolerance. It’s brilliantly simple—to the point of imponderability. There’s a test of faith in Humanity: Do you believe we can overcome self-loyalty? Can we finally abandon our animal herd-instincts, if doing so is the only way to survive?
Tolerance as survival... that’s a bit frightening. Replicating robots on the moon seems infinitely more achievable than a transformation of Humanity. We’ve been striving for so long, and it is really our environment that we have altered, more than ourselves.
Still, I’d like to think we’d rise to occasion. Perhaps we need the cities that cross the oceans first--a tangible bridge to the insubstantiality of Unity. There is Universal Justice in that progression: we can’t achieve immortality, we can’t harness the power of the Earth, the Sun, or the Galaxy unless we can first master ourselves. Tolerance is the essence, the humane in Humanity.
“We are all formed of frailty and error; let us pardon reciprocally each other's folly -- that is the first law of nature.”
- Voltaire
P.S. I’d still rather send a few ships careening haphazardly through the unknown than unleash a hyper-efficient Army of Greeter-bots. If we’re going to introduce ourselves to other civilizations, why hail them with machines? Let’s have a Dance on the Moon, instead. Like middle school—aliens on one side of room, Humans on the other… ;-)

P.P.S. I'm WILDLY jealous that I didn't think of this question!

Do you know for sure what 'Future' 'used to be'???
Now isn't uncertainty the hallmark of future!!!
Be prepared for future shocks...
I'm having the same problems as Ms <1.43>, so may be I'll add to my answer in future...
So the Scientists have started to speak of things without any 'proof' whatsoever. And This is their Fairy-Tale!!! Three types of civilisations??? Why stop at three? Pray who is controlling All?
This guy, to my mind, is like any other ordinary 'religious preacher' talking out of his hat. He is trying to terrorise people into compliance with his way of thinking by hinting of an impending danger (which may or may not be true). Then he is calling the naysayers (or are they the new atheists?), 'terrorists'! And what is this talk of sending 'Robots' to moons to multiply. [The high and mighty Type 3 still rely on a Machine? Naaah! Leave them for type 0, think of something better]...Doesn't this sound familiar again (except this time there is no female robot accompanying it! Or maybe THAT is a female robot or an amoeba?)?
What exactly is the point of all this Power Play???
The future still remains as uncertain as used to be!!!

I didn't watch. I will just say that the "future" is always the same: unknown, and unpredictable. So, it has not changed from "what it used to be." Since the future has not happened, it could not have been anything, anyway, except conceptual.

In the same manner that humanity has always dealt with the Future that is no longer what it used to be.
That is to say by living today.
Excellent question.
