Because the earth is on a tilted axis. If you live in the northern hemisphere, during summer the earth is tilted in such a way that the northern hemisphere is tilted toward the sun. Winter is the opposite, where the southern hemisphere, rather than the northern hemisphere, would be tilted toward the sun. Spring and fall are the in between phases.

Like was answered before, the tilt of the earth is what causes the change in temperature but in the northern hemisphere we are actually further away from the sun in the summer (when we are tilted toward the sun) and it is warmer and we are closer to the sun (when we are tilted away from the sun) in the winter. This explains the "opposite" seasons in the northern and southern hemispheres. As an experiment try it with the open palm of your hand.near a light bulb. move your hand slightly closer but tilted away and then try your hand a little bit further away but tilted more toward the light bulb and feel the heat.
The actual seasons however are based on astronomy, when the sun is over the equator (at noon local time) and movine to the north then we (in the northern hemisphere) have spring when moving south we have fall. When the sun is at it's extreme northern point or southern point we have summer and winter respectively.

The Reason for the Seasons
We have seasons because the earth is tilted as it makes its yearly journey around the sun.
The tilt of the Earth's AXIS is the most important reason why seasons occur.
We have hot summers and cold winters because of the tilt of the Earth's axis.
Because of the tilt the Earth will lean towards the Sun (Summer) or lean away from the Sun (Winter) 6 months later. In between these, Spring and Autumn will occur.

It is true that our seasons are due to the tilt of the earth but it is not true that all countries experience the seasons the same. December is winter in the northern hemisphere because the north pole is tilted away from the sun. In the southern hemisphere, the pole is tilted towards the sun so December is summer there.

"And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years:
And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so.
And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also.
And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth,
And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good.
And the evening and the morning were the fourth day."(Genesis 1:1) KJV Bible
