Does anybody besides me think Rick in 'Casablanca' was/is a patriot?

Of course he was. He also thought, at first, he could just skate through this little European dust-up until it quickly came to an end.
Where did he go off to at the end of the movie?
To join the Free French to fight the Nazis. Kind of like the American fliers who ran off to England to join the RAF during the Battle of Britain. Remember, the US hadn't joined the War yet when Casablanca was set. He also had a little murder charge waiting for him back in New york.
Also note that he fought in a couple other little wars earlier in the Century - always on the side of the underdog.

His actions are not those of a patriot but a principled man who having been forced to admit that his love for Ilsa and hers for Lazlo "don't amount to a hill of beans" in comparison to events in Europe and takes up arms against Nazism.
