World War 2 was the single deadliest conflict the world has ever seen, causing many tens of millions of deaths.The total estimated human loss of life caused by World War II was roughly 72 million people. The civilian toll was around 47 million, including 20 million deaths due to war related famine and disease. The military toll was about 25 million, including the deaths of about 5 million prisoners of war in captivity. The Allies lost about 61 million people, and the Axis lost 11 million.
United States suffered 418,500 deaths(of which 416,800 were military deaths).That represented about 0.32 % of our total population at the time.
China and the Soviet Union suffered the greatest number of losses.China lost 20 million people(3,800,000 military and 16,200,000 civilians) while the Soviet Union lost 23,600,000 (10,700,000 military and 11,900,000 civilians).

and to give you a sense of scale..........750,000 in the US Civil War, killed not with machine guns and planes and bombs and high explosive shells and torpedoes and tanks....but single shot manual reloaded muskets, bayonets and swords....( well, a few explosive shells from cannon but not many).......
