It is a trilogy written by an athiest who in the end writes about killing God.
Many people are up in arms about the movie and are boycotting it because of the theme of the books.
The first movie," The Golden Compass", has been filtered down from the way the book is written.
Probably the sequel will be worse.
In the book it tells about how witches are good and God should die.

It's based on a trilogy of books (I presume there'll be a trilogy of movies to match) where "God" in the Golden Compass universe is really some alien who does a lot of bad things to all the humans, whether they worship him or not, and is basically the source of the world's problems. From what I've heard, this first GC movie glosses over the religious issues, and that the bad guys in that movie isn't clergy but just mysterious men in black. It'll be interesting to see, if and when the other two movies are released, whether they keep trying to gloss things over and how!

Christians are just trying to make sure that their Christian friends, family, etc...don't accidentally take their children to go see a film without knowing what the message of the film is.
Personally, I don't care if my Christian kids go see it. The reality is a book/movie about someone trying to kill God or even actually killing God doesn't make it so. And, if their beliefs in God/Christ can be so easy swayed then they didn't believe in God/Christ anyway and "protecting them" by refusing to let them see this movie will not prevent them from accepting something else besides God/Christ.
"Christians" are doing it the wrong way. (and I use that term loosely because the activist that are making such a big deal about this movie are not Christians they are Religious) It should not be done in an effort to ban the movie. It should not be done in a fearful way that we must not watch this because it disagrees with our teachings.
It should be approached in the manner that this person is an atheist and the book/movie are written to promote anti-Christian views and you should be aware of this before you put YOUR money in this persons pocket.
Sadly, the "Christian" community will use the viewing of this movie by other Christians and they will say, "Well, I am shocked, they must not really be a Christian because they went to see the Golden Compass." They will use this as another tool to separate their view of a real Christian from false ones.
The people that do these kinds of things (use actions to determine if one is a Christian) are not Christians at all. They are Religious. And Religion and Christians are at opposite ends of the spectrum. Ironically, Religion falls into the same category at Atheist!! And, they will have the same destiny.

I don't know if anyone else has said this, but I will, just in case. The Golden Compass (the book, not the movie) is basically about a little girl killing God, so that she can do whatever she pleases. Many think that they left this part out of the movie so that parents would take their children to see the movie, then buy the books for their kids. That's what I've heard. I don't plan on seeing it, because I believe it promotes atheism to children when their parents may not approve. But at least you get the gist of it, now. (:

It is written by an aetheist - but I don't know that it is so much about killing God. I actually just got back from the movie. The Magisterium represents the Catholic Church. In the movie, the Magisterium tries to take control over everything - people, govenment, etc. Of course, there are those who rebel and then the Magisterium reacts. You should look up the author's internet site - it may explain a little better.

Many people are saying that in the end of the book, they kill God. Which shows these people never read the book...or it was too deep for them to understand. At the end of the book, they will battle the first creature God created. This creature, thinking he is better than everyone because he was first in the world, established himself as a god (Not the God). The book is not anti-God. It's anti-authority and anti-organized religion. But I read that they removed such themes in the movie to make it more child-friendly.

it is based on a book. But i wouldn't say that it really has anything to do with killing god. The first book is more about the church. The second and third book i am not so sure about seeing as i haven't read them.

I'm not sure about the books but the first movie really had nothing to do with killing God... Its a fantasy movie... I mean come on. Nobody said anything about harry potter or any of the other books that had things kind of like this in it... Besides, if you are truley into your religion, you will look at this movie/book as a amazing book and story line... Not as actual life and ways you should live your life or believe in. Personally I really did like the movie and am going to read the books. But I am still stongly Catholic and believe deeply in God. The books are just interesting and I have no idea why people are so angry about it. :)

Poeple say it's not that bad...it only suggests bad things and its just a book/movie...blah blah blah. Here is the bottom line. When do you draw the line on stuff that is wrong. People make excuses for doing bad things like saying, "it's not that bad." Thats why there are druggies, people who steal, etc... Here is a question: Do you want to support a movie where the underlying motive is to get people to rebel against authority, teach kids to have sex and go with their "feelings" (which is in his books, not the movie), and hate God? I don't. If people dont think these things don't give people bad ideas, especially kids, we might as well have no limits and they are completely blind. Just because motives are not blatantly suggested doesn't make it ok. Seriously, I don't understand why an atheist who does not believe in a God, wants God (who suppositively doesn't exist) to die and spends his life fighting peoples beliefs trying to get them to believe in nothing. If God doesn't exist then who cares if people believe a God does? The main thing believing in a God instills (speaking for christians) is good morals. And yes, I know there are some crazy christians out there who go about hold signs telling people they are going to hell and it is very unfortunate in my opionion. God tells us to be wise as serpents and gentle as doves, so why people use crazy tactics, I have agood idea but would rather not say. As for me, I am a christian and I will definitely not support this movie in any such way and encourage other Christians to do the same. Jesus does not tell us to do mostly good, we are to always try our best to do what is right.

I'm not sure myself. The whole idea of the movie and book seem all too foolish to me. In the case that it is about killing God, then it's all the more dumb. Personally, I don't want to see the movie or read the book.
If you want to, go ahead.
My answer is terrible, I know, someone else probably knows the deal of it. >.<
Well anyways, good luck!
