It becomes dense... Also it proceeds in the state of matter as - gas to liquid to solid.
Also, the matter gets heated and gains internal energy too.

It becomes "heavier," because the molecules are closer
together when compressed.
As in the auto "press plant," it "changes the shape" of matter.

ref the A Bomb, this would be a good example of matter being compressed, or imploded to be more exact.
