Um...yeah. That's the name of the game. Most people don't remember that the President is not what gets stuff done, it's Congress. And if the Congress that is currently in session isn't on the President's side, virtually nothing will beome law.
And to find the best candidate? You need to research their voting records and what they stand for . Who gives them their PAC money, and where do they get their monetary support from in an election.
A good website that will give you a lot of information is www.projectvotesmart.org. If people don't make informed, educated decisions when they vote. Then they shouldn't be voting.

Some politicians do say what they think the people want to hear & some people believe them! The politicians who take a stand on particular issues, don't change that stand with each new poll, say what they mean & repeat it often, with the same details, are the ones that I listen to because I believe they do feel a desire to really change things for the better in America. Their message must appeal to you & if it does, then that is who you vote for, regardless of what the polls tell you about their chances! You will, at least, be voting for what you believe in & not some pie in the sky!

Yes they do, but this problem isnt limited to just the USA, right now it seems like the only way to determine which candidate is the best, is to choose the candidate that has the least amount of dirt exposed on them during the campaign.

The first thing that happens is an issue is "framed" a certain way. It's presented to the people, framed and defined in a certain way beforehand. Then, just like a lawyer in court who never asks a questions they don't know the answer to, they get the people primed to want certain answers to certain questions. Politicians/media have already outlined the questions, framed the issues, presented the issues and the boundaries to them. Then the politicians give it to us, the way they've manipulated public opinion to expect the answers.

We choose candidates just like you do in your country. Politicians are crooked the World over. We just don't hide it like most countries.

I agree with Rhio9. He is correct.
To choose which one to be president, I vote for the one that has proven to be a leader in the government. Who has done good works and not been found to be a liar or cheat. Has a reputation for getting things done and who believes in the same things that I do.

I think politicians everywhere do this to a degree... in democracies at least...
you can't really get elected if you don't...
and you can only hope that the threat of "not being re-elected" is enough to make them keep their promises

I can answer this with a joke:
How can you tell if a politician is lying?
Their lips are moving.
