I am a 46 year old on depo provera and am having fevers, night sweats and hot flashes. Could this be a sign of menopause?

Yes, hot flashes and night sweats are signs of approaching menopause (you're not officially menopausal until you haven't had a period for 1 year). However, if you have an actual fever, that is, if your temperature is 100 or above, then that's not a sign of menopause--you're sick!

Hi Erica
If you're simply having many hot flashes throughout the day (vs. an actual fever), then you may be experiencing menopausal symptoms. Your thyroid could also be involved.

From my own experience, getting checked for underactive thyroid and taking T3 or a combination of T3 and T4 helped; as did taking DHEA, the precursor to sex hormones that's made by the adrenal glands. In the United States, at the time of this writing, DHEA is available at healthfood stores.

There are some precautions to take when using DHEA and I've listed some links that may help. (Note: DHEA may be contraindicated for someone on Depo Provera).

You may be able to delay the onset of full-on menopause or at the very least avoid or delay many of the annoying symptoms, like hot flashes and night sweats.

One more possibility is that the Depo Provera, itself may be hastening your menopausal symptoms by lowering your estrogen levels, as it is known to do.

I've provided a link on lab tests for menopausal symptoms as well as information on what you should be concerned about regarding Depo Provera's side-effects.

Hope this helps! Good luck!

It sounds like perimenopause and yes, those are some signs. If your "fever" lasts more than a few hours or if it's over 100 degrees, you could have an infection. See your doctor. Have your hormone levels checked and talk to your MD about hormone replacement therapy. It helps with the symptoms. Make sure you talk with your doctor about HRT, if you choose that, and get all the info about side effects. Some make you more susceptible to breast cancer.

There are also some over the counter remedies to help with the symptoms. I have a friend that uses Estrovin and she has good luck with it. I didn't because of chemo, radiation, and a hysterectomy. Good luck.

It sure sounds like it. There's a blood test they can do to let you know where you are with the menopause stage.
