1990 Subaru Legacy

We are in Whitehorse, YT - fairly cold these days. We have to plug in the block heater for it to start (even at only -5 celsius). As well, once it starts, we need to hold the accelerator to keep the engine from stalling.

Last time it worked, it was very cold and difficult to start the car. When it did (while giving it gas) the rpm jumped up and then just crashed without having let off the accelerator (not normal).

Now, the starter will struggle through a couple of revs, and then start clicking. When the headlights are on, they dim while trying to start. I've tried starting while jumpered to another (running) vehicle - no luck. After trying a few times, the starter won't even rev at all - or click. The car just beeps at me.

Help?

I feel for you and it's not -40 yet. Your battery might have kicked the bucket, fuel system clogged or low on power, oil the wrong grade or the car is just pooched (eh) I can't help much more. Start with changing the battery and cleaning all connectors.

OK, Some Good News but Mostly Bad.

Great you have a Good Block Heater! "Leave Heater Plugged In a Short Time After Engine Starts".

No Jump Start; Bad Alternator and/or Shorted Battery? Sounds Like Both.

Stalling; Need Complete Fuel System Service, "Remove, Clean & Adjust Throttle Body, Etc."

Sounds Like Starter May be getting Weak, Remove and Beanch Test It.

Are You Due a Tune-up or Oil & Filter Change?

Have your battery checked sounds like it has a bad cell. With a bad cell or two you won't even be able to jump start it as it will suck the other battery down.

Is the coolant frozen? Sounds like the starter is pulling alot of amps. Sorry but it doesn't sound good.

I'll bet your starter is worn out.
