Didn't they smell trouble from the start?
What made people vote "yes" on this enabling bill?

Many were more afraid of the Communists than right wing parties like the National Socialists. Big business and the army both thought that Hitler could be controlled & used for their purposes once in power. It was a time of crisis and some feared a Communist revolution. The Nazis successfully blamed the Communists for the Reichstag (parliament house) fire. The SA (Nazi storm troopers - essentially Hitler's private army) also menaced the parliament and made it clear that unless the powers were granted, they would probably be taken by force. The members of parliament would have been afraid for their own safety and hoping to avoid bloodshed in the streets.

Unfortunately they like the German people as a whole fell into the trance of the great oratorical skill of a master speech maker and believed he was going to save Germany from the vast economic chaos and depression that had plagued them from the Treaty of Versailles and the massive payments due to reparational war debts thrust upon Germany by England and France. If you believe the leader you have is right , then it does not matter what religion you profess you were or are or will probably vote for their wishes. This is especially true if the speaker has charisma and use psychology and past prejudices with a degree of fierce nationalistic fervor to accompany even a lie.
