In short, I would say Utah on the right and Massachusetts on the Left.
Here's why:
There are different ways to approach this question, but one way to get an idea is to look at Presidential elections, as the two parties usually put forward a clear choice between left and right. In both 2000 and 2004, Wyoming, Idaho and Utah were all near 70 % in voting for Bush. Massachusetts and New York both had about 60 % for the Democrats in both elections - the highest rate besides DC. Most states have a lot of political diversity. I would suggest though based on this that the best example of a Right wing or conservative state is Utah, which is influenced by the social conservatism of Mormonism as well as the general libertarian conservatism of the West. Texas has moderately liberal Austin and some left-leaning Hispanic areas, but Salt Lake City is as conservative as the rest of the state. Massachusetts is probably the most throughly left wing state, and this is related in part to the high concentration of left-wing academia as well as a powerful Democratic party establishment. Much of the rural and subrurban areas of California and New York are fairly conservative, but rural Massachusetts is at least as left-wing as Boston.

California has to be the most left wing. The main characteristics are HOLLYWOOD and Sacramento with all of their gay people.
