This question is one that has arisen from time to time, but it always ends up breaking down to the history of the United States. Nearly every presidential winner has been a white male of a protestant religion. As our country has our roots in this founding this is one of the biggest factors in most people's vote. Most American's hold some type of religious view and it is important to them that their leaders hold the same. As our country was founded on faith it will continue to factor into most elections for a long time to come.

Not really. If he was a satanist, I might have a problem, but his religion or lack thereof would not matter to me. We just need a good leader that has the best interest of the nation at heart, someone who is not beholding to special interest groups and someone who thinks of the nation as a whole, not just small sections of it. I know, I know, I'm living in a dream world, but I'm happy there! =)

It is the most important of all factors for me. Because I believe without God we can do nothing (and I believe we were founded as a Christian nation that is to put God first). As John Jay, the first Chief Justice to the U. S. Supreme Court, once declared, “The most effectual means of securing the continuance of our civil and religious liberties is always to remember with reverence and gratitude the source from which they flow.” It was also he who said, "Providence has given to our people the choice of their rulers, and it is the duty – as well as the privilege and interest – of our Christian nation to select and prefer Christians for their rulers.”
*Edit: It's not easy in today's world...sometimes I don't :)

Well, yes, it does matter to me that they have some sort of Christian faith, but which one doesn't matter to me. On the other hand, they can be as religious as they want but, I don't want them to be trying to push their religion in my face! There is to be a division between church & state, I want it kept that way.

No, it does not. What matters to me is whether or not a candidate for president is going to respect the freedom of religion (or freedom from religion, depending) that has long been an established principle of our nation.
