In the Gordon Lightfoot song RACE AMONG THE RUINS, it says:

"Just think about the fool
Who by his virtue can be found
In a most unusual situation
Playin jester to the clown"

Know anyone who might fit that bill?

So take the best of all that's left
You know this cannot last
Even though your mother was your maker
From her apron strings you pass
Just think about the fool
Who by his virtue can be found
In a most unusual situation
Playin' jester to the clown

Even seeing it in its entirety I am still puzzled I will hunt it out and listen to see how he is singing and see if that helps,

I think he is saying that a
person you loved ends up playing second fiddle to an idiot.

Catchy song.

Absolutely. I play the fool to the world at large. Whenever one reveils his or her heart, he plays to fool. When one is playing the fool (in love) with another in love with him (the clown) then indeed, one is playing the fool to the clown.

But, isn't it nice to be in love, and as such to play the fool in love... or rather the Jester to the clown.

I hope this helps.
