If your Lincoln Memorial penny has a date before 1982, it is made of 95% copper. If the date is 1983 or later, it is made of 97.5% zinc, with a thin copper coating, or "clad."

Yes cents issued before 1983 are .950 copper. Some of the cents of 1982 are also the same but some are like the ones of today copper plated zinc. Copper cents weigh 3.11 grams and the copper coated ones 2.5 grams. Just to let you know it is against the law to melt cents or nickels at this time or remove them in large quantities from the country.
