How do you stand to ride in a car....so many people killed by drunk drivers? How can you stand to go to the beach....so many people killed by sharks? Aren't you scared to go to the hospital...so many people die there?

School shootings unfortuantely have been happening in most westernized countries in the last 20 years, by students or outsiders. That's not good news, but it helps to put in perspective the fact that the US is several times bigger than a lot of other countries and despite media attention the statistical likelyhood of dying by gunshoot in school is probably not greater in the US than in most other western countries.
It's kinda like plane crashes. You always hear about the major plane crashes where everyone dies on the news. If two incidents or accidents get reported on in the same week, the statistical likelyhood of being involved in one of them doesn't go up because the news talks about it more.
Likewise, when society as a whole has deemed something to be an issue of greatest importance the media reports on it more- but that doesn't mena the problem is more prevalant.
For example, the way the media talks about drug use among teenagers these days makes it seems like more teenagers abuse drugs now in 2007 than in 1987- etc. This is not nessecarily statistically true either.

Where will you be going to school in the USA? I understand your fears, but honestly, those are VERY RARE. There are thousands of schools in the US, and you should be safe. Don't go to school expecting a shooting, because this type of thinking will not be good for your learning experience in the US. When you do come to the US to school, watch the other students, and I guarantee that they are not thinking of school shootings.
Please come to the US with an open mind for your education, and an open heart to meet and make new friends.

A coward dies a thousand times. The brave only dies once.
You are over reacting to news. Take it for what its worth.
Look at this way: Compared to all school incidents -
More drivers die due to car accidents. Will you stop using a car or a public transportation?
More passengers die due to plane crash. Will you stop taking a plane?
More terrorists were hijacking planes. Thank God, it does not happen anymore due to all the security screening. Would you have stopped flying?
More people are knifed, gunned down on roads or mugged, raped - would you stop living?
Keep things in proper perspective. Do not think that every school is dangerous and students are toting guns and killing people all around. That is plain naiive thinking.
Be aware of your surroundings, use common sense and go about your daily life.

i have never once been afraid of getting shot in any school i've attended. stabbed or beat up, maybe once or twice, but never shot. you can't let being afraid of things like that rule you're life or it wont be much fun at all. the value of an education far outweighs the dangers of a few pitiful psychopaths
you are more likely to die in a car crash on the way to school than to get shot while actually there

Well depending on where you live, violence is going to be worse. If you live in a large city, crime rate will be higher. But, if you live in a small town like me, the worst that happens is that we have been getting bomb threats. The media makes it seem like all that happens is bombings and shootings in school. If you are talking about college, then there really aren't that many.

NO!!! Don't be scared. You hear about a few incidences out of tens of thousands of positive experiences at other schools. Our media blows little things like that out of proportion. Please don't be scared. Going to school in the US would be a huge opportunity for you, and you'll regret not going just because of the .01% chance that you could actually be a victim of gunfire at a school.

no, no, no. the media is trying to scare you. Ive never known anyone that was in a school shooting. I've never known anyone that knew someone that went to a school that had gun violence. smaller towns are usually better as far as violence. but any big city can be bad.. but then again, that might be the media trying to scare me too. its good to be concerned. but your more likely to get hit by a truck or something wild.

If there were ever a shooting, I would /expect/ it to be in our school, but that doesn't stop me from going.
Our town is so full of controversy it's ridiculous, but that's not going to keep me from getting the education I need.
Plus, there really haven't been all too many. There've been like, what, five? & out of how many schools there are in the US? That's like one in a million.
I don't think you should be too scared.

Look at it this way, there's risk in everything. You could be out in town and be hit by a bus. You could eat something and die from food poisoning.
But i would think that your school has polices and training to deal with incidents like this. In the UK we have theme for bombs.
