Yes, you can start taking hormonal birth control at any point in your cycle--there's no need to wait for your period. You are protected after seven days of active pills.
(Note to everyone who said she can't take the pill and breastfeed: it is safe to take progestin-only pills while nursing. They do not pass into breast milk and are often prescribed to new mothers for this very reason. She can take combined oral contraceptives if she's not nursing.)

Firstly, you must address the fact that you are 16 and have not started your periods. Most doctors suggest that periods should begin between the ages of 9 and 15. Only your doctor can decide whether you should go on birth control pills. If your body has started 'preparing' for periods then you may allowed the contraception. As you are quite late starting you period, it is unlikely any doctor would recommend the pill. If you continue to be sexually active-always make sure to use a condom. This is the only way to protect both of yourselves from pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases.

You should be talking to your OB about this. You can have postpartum bleeding for 6 weeks which is not a period. Also if you are breastfeeding, certain types of birth control can affect that. It would probably be best to use other methods of protection until you get your period, then start the bc. Remember it's not effective the first month. Or just get an IUD. They are awesome, never have to remember to take a pill and works for 5 years. Good luck.

Yes you can start it on Sunday. It is called the "Quick Start" method. As long as you are sure you are not pregnant (which I'm pretty sure your not just having a baby 4 weeks ago).

Are you breast feeding? I hope so, because that helps to prevent a period returning sometimes. However, don't use that as birth control method. Have your hubby use a condom and you can use a diaphram. I don't think you want birth control pill hormones going from the breast milk to the baby.
