As the Breakfast Club suffers from being made in the 80's and nowadays looking dated (because the 1980's are pretty integral to the whole thread of the film), Donnie Darko at least is set in 80's but the story could have been set at any time in the last 20 or 30 years and somehow seems more relevant.

Or maybe it's more of a generation thing?
I should prefer Breakfast Club being a teen of the 80's, but I never got to actually see it til much later (and even back then it had started to date pretty badly) whereas Donnie Darko is one of my favourite films.

Interesting question, but a tough one to answer.
I'd say DD has a better chance of standing the test of time.

In my view Donnie Darko is one of the three best American films of the past 10 years. Its a deep and dark reflection on the censorship and control of thought in the U.S. that satirises
conventional family life too and the sterility of the suburban ideal. The acting, script and direction are brilliant too, as is the soundtrack.

sorry, for me, Breakfast Club was watchable but...meh! Just watched Donnie Darko again last night and in my opinion it's a far superior movie...I'm going to stick my neck out and say yes it will stand the test of time.

Probably not because of all the dark themes... the burning down of the school & stuff... But it's definitely a cult classic!
