The theory of evolution is taught in American schools.
It is really only touched upon and not taught in all of its sublime permutations but it is bette than no introduction at all.

However, there is also determined movement to try and replace this with intelligent design. Which is not science but a religious/ political statment.

In a way. Evolutionary theory, which has changed since Darwin's day, is taught in biology. Usually there's at least something about Darwin himself thrown in there. It's certainly not illegal to teach it, and every attempt to remove it or to add creationism over the past few decades has failed. Thank goodness, too. It's one of the most stable, well-evidenced theories we have, and it's the foundation of biology. Biology's a huge field right now with a lot of exciting research happening, and we can't afford to let American students fall even further behind. What the creationists are trying to do right now is kind of like if the Flat Earthers had come out during the Space Race and insisted that schoolchildren be taught their worldview, as it was the word of God.

It is not a subject on its own, but it underpins most, if not all, of biology, and large parts of most other biological sciences such as medicine, botany, pharmacy etc. If you make the teaching of evolution illegal then you would need to leave out large portions of these subjects, too. Antibiotics research, pesticide resistance, animal testing, etc all are reliant on an understanding of evolutionary theory, mutation and adaptation.
This, of course, would not bother the small minority who believe that ignorance is bliss.
