I know the official meaning of the Indian flag's colors is something like:

Orange/saffron: sacrifice
white: peace
green: faith

But I heard a theory that the colors also mean:

Orange: Hinduism
White: Christianity
Green: Islam

It seems to make sense because those colors do go with those religions, and they're India's three biggest religions. But other people told me that it's not true. So what do you think, is that just a rumor or is it true?

Following is the most acceptable interpretation of colours of the Indian Tricolour.

The saffron stands for courage, sacrifice and the spirit of renunciation. The white, for purity and truth ,the green for faith and fertility.

It is an interesting coincidence that these colours do go with the three major religions but that was not the thought behind the tricolour when it was designed.

I appreciate your keen observation though !!!

I am 59 years age on 07.01.2008 and belong to the State of Kerala,INDIA. Why I said this in relation to this question? Because, during my Primary Education time, one lession for our studies were about the National Flag. As I studied, the National Dlag have the following three colours:

(1) GREEN
(2) WHITE
(3) SAFFARON

I have no knowledge or never studied that these colours represent any minor or major Religions of India. Therefore I have no eligibility/capacity to comment on this about the intentions of most respected Founder Fathers of Indian Constitution and their relevant activities.

With Regards.

The saffron stands for courage, sacrifice and the spirit of renunciation; the white, for purity and truth; the green for faith and fertility. The design of the National Flag was adopted by India's constituent assembly on 22nd july, 1947. It's use and display are regulated by a code. The Indian flag symbolizes freedom. The late Prime Minister Pandit Nehru called it a flag not only of freedom for ourselves, but a symbol of freedom for all people.

Never heard the second. Christianity is not really considered a major faith in India, it's around there with Buddhism, Sikhism, Jainism and Zoroastrianism.
